How we do business

Rockpool invests across the spectrum of UK unquoted opportunities. Many of our opportunities are generated by our network of successful entrepreneurs and business people, but we also work with corporate finance and other professional advisors to find attractive investments.

Investment offers are structured to deliver exciting growth, targeting 30%+ compound annual growth over 3-5 years, or to preserve capital whilst delivering an income yield at or above inflation.

Private investors can access our opportunities through two channels:

  • Experienced investors can join as members of the Rockpool Network and build bespoke investment portfolios in units of £25,000. Anyone seeking to join must be a suitably qualified individual (see our Terms and Conditions).
  • Our range of Portfolio Services offer tax-efficient access to our investment opportunities. These Services are open to all investors on either a Self-select or Managed basis, depending on the status of the individual investor (see the relevant Service brochure - EIS Portfolio Service and Inheritance Service).
Members of the Rockpool Network and investors in the Portfolio Services co-invest on the same terms into each investment opportunity.

Our Investment Strategy

Rockpool is no ordinary private equity firm. Built on a network of successful entrepreneurs, our business is informed by the experience and insights of the same sort of people that we want to support with investment.

Much of our funding comes directly from these individuals, so they really care about the companies we invest in. That means our portfolio companies can draw on expertise and contacts that just wouldn't be accessible otherwise. It also frees us from the constraints of a fund, so we can put all our weight behind the best opportunities.

Sector and stage:

We invest in UK-managed businesses that can demonstrate growth potential. Our experience spans a wide variety of business sectors and we approach each opportunity on its merits. We have a strong preference to invest in mature and profitable businesses. We only back young businesses and turnrounds where we can see a clear route to profitability.

Size:

Our target equity investment is £2-10million. We like to support our portfolio businesses with further rounds of investment.

Opportunity:

Development Capital: our investment can be used to fuel rapid organic growth or to support a strategic acquisition.

Equity Release: we help business owners to diversify their wealth, enabling management shareholders to realise part of their capital whilst continuing to drive the business forward. We can also facilitate the exit of other shareholders.

Management Buy-outs: we support the outright purchase of a business by its management team.

Projects: we provide structured finance for infrastructure projects, including local energy generation and PFI-style projects.

Our approach is open and friendly. We want to boost the success of entrepreneurial managers, not to run businesses ourselves. To us, every entrepreneur is a Rockpool Network member in the making. If we can help you build capital in your own business, you may one day be investing with us in the success of others.

We work closely with professional advisors to identify and support the best growing companies. We value the personal relationships between advisors and their clients and we believe that experienced corporate finance professionals can help us shorten the investment process and maximise long-term shareholder value.

Testimonials

When choosing an EIS provider, having a complete understanding of the underlying investments is essential. Rockpool is simply the most transparent company I’ve dealt with and clients can invest with full knowledge of where they are investing, which cannot be said about everyone. Also, Rockpool’s costs are unusually competitive which helps to improve the client total return.

The Rockpool team are professional, open and knowledgeable. The EIS and Inheritance Portfolio Services offer a number of innovations which set Rockpool apart from the crowd and their commitment to sharing information with clients goes way beyond the regulatory minimums. I’ve found Rockpool to be a pleasure to deal with and a real breath of fresh air in the market place.

I have known certain members of the Rockpool team for over 25 years. In that time, I have worked with them when they were at 3i plc and, more latterly, when at Hotbed, which grew to become the largest UK syndicator of private investors into SMEs.

Over the years, I have gained real respect for the Rockpool founders and have been impressed by their achievements. I am sure that Rockpool will be a leading influence in the private investor arena, and BDO is delighted to have been appointed as corporate advisors to the business.

Kim Hayward (BDO)

Kim Hayward - Partner, BDO

EMW has worked with members of the Rockpool team for many years. We have formed a very close working relationship which has been mutually beneficial.

I think it is reasonable to claim that, together, EMW and Rockpool team members have played significant roles in developing the whole market for investment in UK private companies by private investors. This has been achieved by devising innovative procedures and processes which allow for efficient syndication of dozens of private investors into single transactions.

I know that Rockpool plans more innovation, and I am sure this will be good for private investors. EMW is looking forward to helping Rockpool with its exciting plans.
